During this 9-hour private guided tour of Oxford & Blenheim Castle, you will have the opportunity to discover both the oldest university in the English-speaking world (Oxford) and the Home Castle of Winston Churchill (Blenheim Castle).
The driver-guide will pick you up at your hotel (or apartment) to drive you first to Oxford. Located right in the middle between London and Gloucester, Oxford exudes intellectual activity and scholarly pursuits: it is the second-oldest continually running university, right after the University of Bologna and it includes 38 colleges and 6 permanent private halls. Over the centuries, Oxford has certainly built up an impressive reputation after educating a total of 26 British Prime Minister. Oxford is known as the "City of Dreaming Spires" based on the architecture of the world famous University buildings. No woman was allowed inside the University until 1878 and it is only in 1974 that the last of the all-male colleges opened their doors to women. Its fine, wide streets and noble buildings (and even its pubs!) have been the backdrop for countless TV programmes and films, from Inspector Morse to Harry Potter.
Starting at Christ Church, perhaps the best known of the university's colleges, you will then visit the Sheldonian Theatre, Radcliffe Camera, the Bodleian Library (second largest library in the UK with 11 million items), the Bridge of Sighs, the University Church of St Mary the Virgin, The Queens' College Oxford and the Divinity School (subject to availability and restrictions). With your Blue Badge Guide, you will visit memorials that bear witness to important moments in history, including the memorial to the Oxford martyrs of the Reformation and you will see Charles I's Royalist headquarters in Oxford during the English Civil Wars.
After this amazing visit, you will have a lunch in one of the local restaurants and then our driver-guide will bring you to Blenheim Castle (around 30 min drive).
Located on the extreme North East side of the beautiful Cotswolds, Blenheim was the sprawling home of the Dukes of Marlborough for more than three centuries. Our Blue Badge will explain you how Blenheim was built between 1705 and 1722: it was a tribute to John Churchill, First Duke of Marlborough for his victories against the French and Bavarians in the War of Spanish Succession. The Palace encompasses 187 rooms—from the sumptuous reception halls to the equally magnificent private quarters and is still today a great example of the excesses of late baroque architecture. It was used as a convalescence hospital for wounded soldiers during the First World War. During the Second World War, between 1939 and 1940, more than 400 boys were evacuated to the palace from Malvern College. For one academic year the college used the State Rooms as dormitories and classrooms – and the boys even had lessons in the bathrooms! During the 11th Duke of Marlborough’s time at the palace, the house and grounds were opened up to the public and declared a World Heritage Site in 1987. For families, our guide will include a last stop at the Pleasure Gardens where your children will find a maze and an adventure park.
We will then drive you back to London and drop you off at your hotel or apartment.
