During this 10-hour private guided tour of Stonehenge & Winchester, you will have the opportunity to discover both the most mystical prehistoric site in UK (Stonehenge) and the longest Gothic Cathedral in Europe (Winchester).
Our professional driver and our Blue Badge guide will pick you up at your hotel (or apartment) to drive you first to Stonehenge (2-hour drive). Located right in the middle between Bristol and Southampton, Stonehenge exudes mystery, spiritualism and beauty: Stonehenge is the most famous and mysterious ancient site in the United Kingdom. The giant stones dominate the Wiltshire countryside, and five thousand years after the circle was built, it continues to astound archeologists as it is a masterpiece of engineering. Perhaps it was a ceremonial temple; an astronomical observatory; a burial place created by King Arthur; or part of a larger complex with areas devoted to the dead and the living. Some people think it was built by aliens – and Druids believe it was constructed on the site of converged ley lines (a mysterious energy grid). Our Blue Badge guide will explain you the history of this ancient site (it is one of Seven Wonders of the Medieval World), pointing out the altar, slaughter and heel stones, above which the sun rises dramatically on the summer solstice. Stonehenge is today on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
You will be able to get as close as around 10 meters (11 yards) from the stones and if you'd like, we can also arrange for you a VIP access in the inner circle at sunset time for an extra cost (subject to availability). In this latter case, you will enter the stone circle itself and stand beside the mighty Sarsen rocks towering above you!
After this amazing visit, you will have a lunch in one of the local restaurants and then our Blue Badge guide will bring you to Winchester (around 50 min drive).
Our Blue Badge guide will show you the city's major landmark: Winchester Cathedral, one of the largest cathedrals in Europe, with the distinction of having the longest nave and overall length of all Gothic cathedrals in Europe. You will discover its magnigicent interior which has seen the weddings and funerals of ancient kings and queens, and the coronation of Richard The Lionheart. You will continue the tour by visiting the impressive crypt and if time permits, the famous University of Winchester and Winchester College, the oldest public school in the United Kingdom still to be using its original buildings.
We will then drive you back to London and drop you off at your hotel or apartment.
Our standard pick-up/drop-off for this tour is within Central London limits. It is also possible to pick you up outside Central London limits at extra cost, please contact us to receive our quote.
